Here’s what associate editor Michelle Garcia is listening to this week:
A few months ago, I moved within walking distance of the office. Since I’m a born-and-bred New Yorker, and even though I’ve lived in Los Angeles for six years, I now walk home every day after work. Here are a few songs I listen to while making my way west on Wilshire Blvd.
1. “You Don’t Know Me” - Ben Folds and Regina Spektor
Musician Jackie Tohn introduced me to the awesomeness that is Regina Spektor, who did this song with one of my favorite musicians of all time, Ben Folds. Despite the lyrics, the song puts me in a good mood. The video is also awesome, because it stars the effing hilarious Tim Heidecker and Eric Warheim of the over-the-top, ridiculous Tim & Eric Awesome Show on Adult Swim.
2. “Crazy in Love” - The Magic Numbers
I love covers. I love The Magic Numbers. While I go back and forth on Beyonce, I think this song is pretty awesome.
3. “Sweetness” - Jimmy Eat World
Last week, some old guy flagged me down as I was listening to this. He said, “Hey, do you need bus fare or something?” and I was like, “No.” He said, “You’re walking so fast, it looks like you need to get somewhere in a hurry!”
4. “Droid” - Selby Tigers
In high school and for a couple of months in college, I was a sprinter and hurdler. This was the ass-kicking song I had in my head during race day; it’s kind of perfect for the 200-meter dash. A couple of weeks ago, I was at my mom’s house, and I dug up my old copy of old Hopelessly Devoted to You Vol. 3, and it sparked old memories of track practice in the snow and meets at The 168th Street Armory.
